Job Summary

 

The School District of Philadelphia operates three bus garages to transport students to and from schools and other related educational activities. This is administrative work supporting the daily operations at the direction of a Transportation Program Manager/ Garage Supervisor. An employee in this class is responsible for dispatching bus and truck chauffeurs to various locations within Philadelphia and the surrounding five counties. Ensures adequate coverage for regular transportation routes and supplemental transportation. Dispatchers stay in touch with drivers on the road, communicating by phone or two-way radio. Monitors the schedule of their assigned bus fleet and addresses any problems that arise during their operation. Dispatchers answer questions and solve problems adhering closely to the policy and procedures outlined by the School District of Philadelphia as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assigns the bus chauffeurs to regularly scheduled bus routes or special trips; explains nature and destination of different trips or other typical assignments; ensures adequate coverage is provided for regular bus routes; answers questions or resolves problems posed by drivers.
  • Receives and answers emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Assists transportation supervisor by preparing the assignment board, sign-in sheets and the report of operations; prepares attendance records; prepares other reports formatted on a personal computer for submission and related materials.
  • Maintains up to date records essential to the operations.
  • Inputs data into bus tracking software.
  • Handles heavy phone and radio traffic.
  • Performs duties professionally and resolves any issues that may arise as directed by the supervisor.
  • Posts field trips and extra-curricular trips; assigns drivers and substitute drivers to cover assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of full-time, paid experience as a Bus Chauffeur or Truck Chauffeur.
  • Bilingual or Multilingual experience, desired.

 

        OR

 

  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Talent

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • the principles, methods and procedures governing the operation of school buses and trucks.
    • the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT and other relevant governmental and industrial standards and policies.
    • the geography of the city and current traffic conditions.
    • Geotagging technology.

 

    • Demonstrated ability to:
  • assign the work of a group of employees engaged in operating buses or other vehicles to ensure maximum coverage on the various transportation routes.
  • maintain records and prepare reports.
  • understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • analyze and evaluate routing patterns for efficiency of operation. 
  • utilize two-way radio and state-of-the-art communications and electronic equipment.
  • work under pressure and handle a high work volume.
  • use Geotagging technology.
