Job Summary
Provides a career and technical education instructional program that prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills in an entry-level position or apprenticeship in the industry or to continue into a post-secondary educational program in the field of protective services and criminal justice.
Essential Functions
• Assesses the instructional requirements of students and provides orientation and instruction in protective services and criminal justice career and technical education related competencies.
• Implements the educational program within the standards and policies approved by the School Board and guidelines established by the Office of Career and Technical Education.
• Participates in regular professional development activities to keep abreast of advances in technology, curriculum and instructional delivery techniques; remains current in all areas of the field of expertise.
• Prepares students for industry by teaching industry-recognized standards; administers industry-recognized certification examinations approved by the District to students, as appropriate.
• Provides technical skills training to students to prepare for the appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) approved end-of-program National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) assessment.
• Assists in the development, revision and implementation of the curriculum as it pertains to each instructional area in accordance with established state and District guidelines and formats.
• Develops, revises and implements instructional activities to support the curriculum.
• Utilizes a diversity of instructional methods in order to motivate students and promote learning.
• Mentors students and provides counseling and/or refers students to appropriate school specialists.
• Provides and maintains a well-organized, safe learning environment.
• Implements and maintains a preventative safety program in lab and classroom areas consistent with related Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; involves students in the safety program.
• Prepares weekly lesson plans and provides lesson plans for short-term substitutes as required by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
• Maintains daily attendance records and instructional plans.
• Implements and maintains a system of student discipline and encourages appropriate student behavior, in accordance with policies approved by the School Board.
• Maintains student records, including Performance Assessment Logs, and communicates student progress to parents/guardians.
• Develops and promotes student leadership, civic responsibility and citizenship through the integration of Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) activities into the curriculum, and through membership and participation in CTSO conferences and competitions.
• Prepares students for work-based learning opportunities, as appropriate.
• Maintains and conducts Occupational Advisory Committee (OAC) meetings at least twice annually to align the career and technical program with current industry standards; seeks recommendations for improvements to curriculum, facilities, equipment, and safety.
• Uses, maintains, safeguards, inventories, and disposes of all instructional equipment in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and District requirements and policies approved by the School Board.
• Participates in the development of assigned students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and utilizes all accommodations as indicated on the IEPs.
• Maintains all paperwork and reports pertinent to the position and as required by standards and policies approved by the School Board and guidelines established by the Office of Career and Technical Education.
• Provides instruction in crime scene management, first responder health and safety responses, police concepts, correctional theory, fundamentals of the court system and the basic operations related to private security.
• Introduces students to the technical aspects of policing careers and protective services related industries such as completing accident reports, utilizing radio communication techniques and equipment, understanding and utilizing applicable case law for given scenarios, as well as defining and demonstrating an understanding of the proper use of force.
• Provides guidance and instruction related to evidence collection, principles of deescalation, CPR and emergency and non-emergency safety transportation, as well as the demonstrated utilization and understanding of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Crimes Code and Vehicle Code.
Instructs students in the physical fitness standards in accordance with the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission standards
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Two years of current full-time, paid experience in a state or municipal police agency, county sheriff’s office, military police, or corrections facility.
OR
• Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
• Four years of current full-time paid, experience in a state or municipal police agency, county sheriff’s office, military police, or corrections facility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of:
o police and protective services legal and procedural career and ethical standards.

o contemporary standards related to protective services, the use of force and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Crimes and Vehicle Code and first responder medical response. o the functions and processes of the court system, and applicable case law pertaining to policing circumstances
o the requirements, processes, and routines needed to maintain physical fitness commensurate with the career. o the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the protective services field.
o the proper vocabulary, processes, and sensitivities necessary for an officer of the law to be functional in any social situation.
• Demonstrated ability to:
o select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional methods.
o implement assessment tools for effective student evaluations. o communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
o establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses
Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Career and Technical Intern or Career and Technical Instructional Certificate for the area of Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement or immediate eligibility for an Emergency Teaching Permit.
