Title: Lead Academic Coach (General)

Department: Office of Leadership Development

Reports To: Director, Instructional Support

Job Summary 

Directs and monitors the activities of school-based staff. Gives functional direction to Academic  Coaches or Teachers in the pre K-8 or 8-12 grade levels. Provides support to the Network in the  achievement of academic goals and objectives of the District. Plans and administers the  implementation of instructional strategies to support a successful academic program. Works with  principals and teachers on a one-on-one basis and in small group presentations in the  implementation of grade-level instructional strategies. Provides technical assistance to principals  and teachers in the expansion and refinement of “best practices”

Essential Functions

  • Defines and outlines the operating procedures for achieving academic program goals in the  assigned area. 
  • Makes school visits to observe instructional practices and to make assessment of problems and  their magnitude. 
  • Monitors the work of principals and teachers on the delivery of instructional programs that  address current academic concerns.
  • Determines how principals can be more effective in implementing their educational program. 
  • Introduces educational innovations and communicates information regarding objectives of  educational initiatives. 
  • Develops, designs and implements staff development programs. 
  • Prepares performance evaluations of Academic Coaches as needed. 

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an academic discipline.

Five years of full-time, paid experience as an appointed, certified, pre-k, elementary or  secondary teacher in an urban school district which has involved providing professional  development for adult learners.

Certificates/Licenses 

Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional certificate for the area of assignment - elementary certification required for K-8/middle schools and secondary certification required for  high schools. 

Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania administrative or supervisory certificate.

Demonstrated knowledge of:

o standards and current core curriculum. 

o integrated curriculum. 

o assessment – classroom-based and system wide. 

o the assigned subject area. 

o the full spectrum of differentiated instruction. 

o academic diagnostics in relation to effective learning environments and instruction.

Demonstrated ability to:

o interpret, understand and apply data. 

o provide support and coaching to teachers and principals. 

o communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 

o establish and maintain effective working relationships.
