Job Summary
Provides instruction to students in the areas of welding designed to develop skills in gas, arc, shielded and non-shielded metal arc, brazing, flame cutting and plastic welding, as well as hand and semi-automatic and automatic welding processes. Utilizes a variety of instructional techniques to prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills in an entry-level position or apprenticeship in the construction industry or to continue into post-secondary educational programs. Teaches students basic principles and technical skills to support the commercial and industrial industry as well as the local area ship builder’s industry, and other professionals engaged in the construction of buildings and other structures. Stays abreast of technological advances in the welding industry.
Essential Functions
- Assesses the instructional requirements of students and provides orientation and instruction in welding technology career and technical education related competencies.
- Ensures that industry standards are incorporated into the educational program.
- Provides training in the proper use of tools and equipment related to the welding industry; instructs students in all related (OSHA) safety procedures and industry protocols.
- Stays abreast of technological advances in the welding field.
- Monitors student progress and assesses their skills according to standardized measurements.
- Participates in the development of internships and apprenticeships for students enrolled in the Welding Technology Program; ensures that students have a variety of school and work-based experiences; oversees students in a variety of job/school sites.
- Partners with the building trades industry, City of Philadelphia, architects, engineers and building developers in the development of learning and training activities.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Four years of current full-time, paid journeyman level experience as a welder in the industry.
OR
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Seven years of current full-time, paid journeyman level experience as a welder in the industry.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- the welding standards established by the American Welding Society.
- the welding standards established by the Society of Mechanical Engineers.
- the welding standards established by the American Bureau of Ships.
- the modern methods, theories and practices in the area of construction.
- the materials and techniques used in the area of construction.
- the safety procedures related to the construction industry.
- the proper care and use of tools and instruments used in the area of construction.
- Demonstrated ability to:
- select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional methods.
- implement assessment tools for effective student evaluations.
- communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- establish effective working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses
- Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vocational/Intern certificate in Welding.
