Job Summary
Oversees the Print Shop Operations and a staff of skilled and semi-skilled employees engaged in the printing of a variety of publications and forms for the School District. Schedules and prioritizes work, estimates cost and time factors, and ensures the timely delivery of printing requests. Confers with departmental representatives on needs and determines which printing methods are appropriate for meeting printing requirements. Additional responsibilities involve assessing training needs and providing training to staff as required.
Essential Functions
- Directs and supervises the activities of staff engaged in the operation of equipment in the bindery, pressroom, cutting room and photo lab; reviews requests for printing services from schools and administrative offices; determines those requests which are to be printed by contracted vendors.
- Estimates and prices all jobs and determines methods of reproduction; ensures that digital pre-press work such as imposition, color separations, scanning and typesetting has been performed in accordance with the printing specifications.
- Writes up job jackets and completes instructions to ensure expedient processing; writes detailed instructions for size and the weight of paper to be used; maintains records of each job assigned; records time each employee spends on a job; notes problems or changes with each job; closes out job jackets at the completion of each job.
- Interacts with departmental representatives with regards to problem resolution; tracks and resolves complaints; maintains communication with departmental representatives on the resolution of problems.
- Keeps abreast of current innovations and equipment in the printing field; identifies techniques adaptable to the printing operation and makes recommendations to the Director.
- Tracks usage of paper stock; orders paper stock and other non-press related supplies.
- Coordinates UPS shipping.
- Repairs and maintains equipment as needed.
- Ensures that a clean and safe working environment is maintained.
- Prepares incident reports as required
Minimum Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Seven years of full-time, paid experience in the printing trade, three of which have involved supervising the operations of a print shop.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated knowledge of:
- the administrative principles and practices as applied to the operation of a diversified printing operation.
- the practices, machinery, tools and equipment used in printing operations.
- scheduling, standard costs and production standards as related to the printing industry.
- the procedures used to analyze printing processes, material, labor and other costs required to make job estimates.
• Demonstrated skill in:
- in the use of tools, equipment, and materials of the printing trade.
Demonstrated ability to:
- write printing specifications and instructions for a skilled and semi-skilled staff.
- resolve complex printing problems through consultation with departmental representatives and assignment of work.
- estimate time, labor and materials.
- assign and coordinate various phases of the printing process to maximize production.
- evaluate proofs for adherence to specifications and quality standards.
- operate, adjust and maintain printing equipment.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships.
