Job Summary

Provides health services to children enrolled in the Early Childhood programs which includes the Early Childhood Centers, Prekindergarten Head Start and designated community partnership schools or sites. Visits centers on a biweekly basis to observe the physical condition of children and the health practices employed by center staff.  Promotes health care practices and provides health education to pupils and their families, including conducting home visits as needed. Assists teaching staff in the development of a safe and healthy classroom environment. Contacts outside medical professionals to obtain information about and to monitor the status of children’s conditions, including the reinforcement of doctors’ instructions to parents.

Essential Functions

•  Reviews each child’s health assessment, dental exam, health and nutrition histories, and any other pertinent forms in the child’s folder; reports any and all necessary information to the child’s teacher in an effort to provide the optimal experience for the child and family.  

•  Records all information pertaining to the child’s health in a computer tracking system and in progress notes; performs follow-up services with child and family as needed.

•  Organizes and assists in performing health screenings for children; sets dates for testing; secures space; notifies teachers and parents of dates; provides follow-up of failed screening results.

•  Creates health service plans for children requiring intensive health supervision; meets quarterly with parents, teacher, and Special Needs Coordinator to review and update plans; conducts health education seminars for children, parents, and staff on a regular basis. 

•  Organizes center for health needs (e.g. first aid supplies, toothbrushes, hand washing and infection control supplies, notices to parents, emergency procedures); ensures that supplies are maintained.

•  Attends and participates in component meetings; communicates regularly with all other component team members.

•  Establishes and maintains professional rapport with school nurses and community health care providers to ensure continuity of care.

•  Signs up eligible children for the ACCESS program.

•  Submits schedules and reports in a timely fashion according to established schedules.

•  Keeps abreast of advances in health care, especially as it relates to preschool aged children.

Minimum Requirements

•  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
•  Completion of an accredited nursing program.
•  Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania School Nurse Certificate. 
•  Valid Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing license as a registered professional nurse. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of: 

○     the principles, practices and techniques of pediatric nursing.  ○ professional nursing theory and practices.

Knowledge of: 

○     public health principles and practices and their implication for the needs of preschool age children.

○     the resources available to meet the health care needs of urban preschool children.

○ child growth and development principles and theories. 

Ability to: 

gain the confidence and cooperation of pupils while rendering health services. 

instruct children, parents and teachers in understanding and dealing with          

           

health problems.

apply accepted procedures and techniques of nursing to school health nursing situations.

            

prepare and maintain thorough records and reports.

           

communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

            

establish and maintain effective working relationships.
