Title: Director, Science 

Department: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment 

Reports To: Deputy, Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

Job Summary

Coordinates and reviews plans designed to provide a comprehensive education program in  science for grades K-12. Provides leadership in the areas of curriculum development, staff  development, and the effective utilization of instructional materials. Monitors programmatic  activities/initiatives and ensures that they are in compliance with the School District of  Philadelphia’s action plan.  

Essential Functions

• Oversees and directs the activities of staff; coordinates the planning and implementation of  curricular programs and initiatives relative to K-12 science; develops plans that address  continuous student improvement in response to District data. 

• Provides direct support to the Deputy of Curriculum and Instruction with regard to science instruction. 

• Oversees and reviews benchmark test content and design; researches current instructional  practices and models for effective instruction. 

• Plans and coordinates meetings and the work of science curriculum specialists and school based instructional leaders and coaches 

• Works collaboratively with internal departments, institutions of higher education and other external organizations and agencies. 

• Ensures continuous, provided support in the implementation of quality science instruction, assessments and personalized professional development on best practices.

• Develops, plans and conducts ongoing professional development training for instructional leaders on integrating best practices. 

• Observes and monitors the implementation of quality science instruction at schools. 

• Coordinates with the School District initiatives and the State regarding the effectiveness of the science program implementation. 

 

Other Functions

• Attends community and professional meetings as appropriate to support curriculum  

Minimum Requirements

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university. 

• Seven years of full-time, paid, professional experience in education, three of which have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity and have involved implementing instructional  strategies. 

All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume. 

Certificates/Licenses

• Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate for K-12 or Elementary and Secondary Principal. 

OR

• Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate to supervise Science for the Science specialty.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • PA Common Core Standards and curriculum development, as well as implementation and  instructional strategies related to curriculum, content and problem-solving.

  • the principles, practices and methods of education in Science. 

  • a variety of pedagogical modalities. 

  • research related to the field of expertise. 

  • the principles of educational administration. 

  • supervisory methods and techniques. 

Demonstrated ability to: 

  • apply research to practical situations. 

  • oversee and review benchmark test content and design. 

  • plan and administer strategies for effective system wide staff development. 

  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 

  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
