Job Summary 

The Deputy of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will lead the development of instructional  systems including curriculum for all subject areas and all instructional programs and services.  The goal of these systems is to provide meaningful tools and supports to leaders, teachers,  families, and other staff to engage students in rigorous, grade-level, culturally-responsive  learning. The Deputy of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will be charged with planning  and coordinating curriculum development, design, evaluation, assessment, testing  accountability, research, and special projects. The Deputy will also ensure that principals,  academic divisions and central staff are equipped with the tools and training to implement,  support, and monitor effective instruction. The Deputy of Curriculum, Instruction, and  Assessment will have a strong, proven track record in improving educational results for students,  outstanding adult learning and development skills, and an ability to translate teacher and school  needs into District leadership and policy.  


Essential Functions 

  • Oversees the Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. 

  • Determines, defines and implements policies and strategies to achieve the goals, objectives  and priorities of the office. 

  • Leads the activities of the staff; establishes areas of responsibility for and monitors the  effectiveness of the team. 

  • Provides support for collecting, analyzing and reporting student progress and growth data for  District reports; works closely with the Office of Strategic Analytics. 

  • Collaborates with the ORE in the development, administration, and reporting of a large-scale  summative and formative assessment program. 

  • Conducts research to introduce new strategies on improvements in curriculum design and on  the development and design of integrating technology with curriculum and instruction.  

  • Reviews and analyzes assessment data to determine curricular and instructional needs for theDistrict and develop appropriate policies and strategies to achieve academic growth.

  • Helps to create the District’s mission regarding curriculum innovation and reform and develops  appropriate recommendations to meet changing trends; maintains and disseminates current  knowledge of all pertinent changes and developments related to curriculum innovation and  reform. 

  • Provides leadership in the revision of curriculum and materials based on data as well as  teacher, principal and academic division input.

  • Ensures that the rich diversity of the city and the District are a component of curriculum  development.  

  • Identifies and evaluates interventions and opportunities to accelerate student performance.

  • Assesses the core competencies that teachers need to implement curriculum and deliver  instruction; works with the Office of Talent to ensure such competencies are recruited for and  developed in current staff.  

  • Evaluates grant possibilities and coordinates support on writing and designing grant content to  extend District opportunities in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

  • Reviews, assesses and manages the budget as well as resolutions and contracts.

  • Keeps abreast of new issues and developments in curriculum design, instructional practices  and assessment of design.

Minimum Requirements 

  • Master’s degree in education or educational administration from an accredited college or  university.

  • Ten years of full-time, paid, educational experience, at least five of which have been in an  administrative or supervisory capacity. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of: 

    • the principles of educational administration.

    • state and national trends that impact development and improvements in curriculum  design. 

    • curriculum development and implementation, as well as authentic  evaluation/assessment practices. 

    • instructional strategies related to curriculum and content. 

    • governmental statues and regulations relating to instruction and curriculum. 

  • Demonstrated ability to: 

    • provide leadership in the development and implementation of the curriculum. 

    • coordinate, facilitate and implement diversified interdisciplinary programs.

    • coordinate and oversee the work of staff and attain effective results. 

    • design and initiate innovative educational programs and practices. 

    • evaluate data and prepare cogent recommendations. 

    • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

    • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
