Job Summary

This is special education work developing, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs for exceptional students whose primary identified need is academic enrichment. Employees in this class teach students using curriculum, and instructional methods and techniques which enhance the student’s using curriculum, and instructional methods and techniques which enhance the student’s academic abilities. Work involves the use of effective classroom strategies to remediate specific learning disabilities. An important aspect of the work is serving as a member of a multi-disciplinary team for planning a comprehensive educational program for students, which includes remedial and affective education, and related instructional strategies.

Essential Functions

• Plans classroom lessons and activities in accordance with the skill level of students; develops and uses techniques and materials to enhance the students’ academic abilities and remediate specific learning disabilities; ensures that the classroom is arranged to promote learning; implements affective educational interventions as needed.

• Develops an Individual Education Plan for each student; ensures that plans are complete and current and that each includes strategies for specialized instruction; sets individualized goals and objectives for students.

• Serves on multi-disciplinary team with other professional and paraprofessional staff

members; collaborates with team members in the planning and development of a comprehensive educational program for students; reviews and evaluates students’ progress and overall effectiveness of the program.

• Conducts parent conferences; informs families of student progress; encourages family participation in school activities; disseminates information regarding the various support services available in the school.

Minimum Requirements

• Completion of a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited college or university.

Certificates/Licenses

Possession of a valid in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State certificate to teach those with mental or physical disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of:

o the modern methods, principles, and practices of elementary and secondary education.

o the theory and principles of child growth and development.

o the special principles, practices, and materials used in the instruction of exceptional students with specific learning disabilities.

o the curriculum and instructional techniques for instructing students with learning disabilities. 

Demonstrated ability to: 

o select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional methods.

o prepare, plan, and teach lessons.

o establish and maintain effective working relationships with pupils, parents, administrators, associates, and community agency staff.
