Title: Director, Curriculum and Instruction (English Language Arts),

Job Summary 

Provides leadership for a specific content area in the areas of curriculum development, staff  development, and the effective utilization of instructional materials. Monitors programmatic  activities and ensures that they are in compliance with governmental mandates and supervises  content specific Curriculum Specialists. Develops and/or acquires Common Core aligned  curricular resources and maintains an in-depth understanding of national and Pennsylvania  Common Core State Standards. Works collaboratively with department leadership and network  leadership. Understands the curriculum, identifies curricular resources and implements  initiatives as required with the ongoing support of Curriculum and Instruction. Understands and  assists in implementing current methodologies, effective instructional strategies and facilitates  curriculum-related professional development district-wide. Creates and manages K-12  curriculum and instruction plans designed to provide a comprehensive education program in the  assigned area. For World Languages, other functions include coordinates and reviews plans  designed to provide a comprehensive education program in the assigned area.  

Essential Functions 

Oversees and directs the activities of staff; coordinates the planning and implementation of curricular programs and initiatives; develops plans that address continuous student  improvement in response to District data. 

Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates the curricular and instructional  program of the District. 

Ensures continuous support in the implementation of quality instruction and personalized  professional development on best practices. 

Develops, plans and conducts ongoing professional development District-wide for all  principals, assistant principals, and teachers. 

Observes and monitors the implementation of quality instruction District-wide.

Develops a system-wide plan for curriculum and improvement consistent with the District  vision, goals, and policies.

Works with administrators, principals, assistant principals, and teachers; coordinates the  planning and implementation of curricular programs and develops plans that address  continuous student improvement in response to District data. 

Coordinates with the School District initiatives and the State regarding the effectiveness of the designated content program implementation. 

Researches current instructional practices and models for effective instruction.

Works collaboratively with internal departments, institutions of higher education and other external organizations and agencies. 

Organizes and reviews the results of curriculum committees, ensuring results are consistent  with District objectives. 

Works with principals and teacher committees in organizing and coordinating grade level and department meetings in order to effect horizontal and vertical integration and articulation of the  instructional program throughout the District. 

Keeps informed on the latest research, trends, and developments in all areas of education and  interpret for staff as necessary. 

Evaluates and recommends textbook and supplementary materials selection used in  educational programs in the District. 

Directs the creation of and edits for publication of all curriculum guides and materials prepared  by and to be distributed among the instructional staff. 

Coordinates and monitors staff development and in-service activities for the education staff.

Performs a significant leadership role in fostering professional growth and building staff morale throughout the District. 

Examines and develops graduation requirements and other educational standards; develops appropriate recommendations for revision consistent with District goals and within state  requirements. 

Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Deputy Chief.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Seven years of full-time, paid, professional experience in education, three of which have been  in an administrative or supervisory capacity and have involved implementing instructional  strategies.

Certificates/Licenses

  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate for K-12 or Elementary and Secondary Principal OR
  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate to supervise reading for the literacy specialty 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of: 

  • curriculum development and implementation and instructional strategies related to  curriculum, content and problem-solving. 
  • the principles, practices and methods of education in Literacy or Mathematics,  Science Social Studies or Dual Language/English Language Learners. 
  • a variety of pedagogical modalities. 
  • research related to the field of expertise. 
  • educational administration. 
  • supervisory methods and techniques. 

Demonstrated ability to: 

  • apply research to practice. 
  • oversee and review benchmark test content and design. 
  • plan and administer strategies for effective system wide staff development. o communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
