Job Summary
Provides an instructional program that prepares students for employment related to
institutional, commercial or self-owned food establishments or other food industry
occupations. Provides instruction and specialized learning experiences which include
theory, laboratory and work experience related to the planning, selection, preparation
and serving of quantity food and food products; nutritive values; use and care of
commercial equipment; safety; and sanitation precautions. Provides instruction designed
to develop skills in students desiring to become employed in all areas of the food service
industry at entry level.


Essential Functions:
● Assesses the instructional requirements of students and provides orientation and
instruction in culinary arts and technical education related competencies.
● Ensures that industry standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture are
incorporated into the educational program including criteria outlined in the formalized
task list provided by the State of Pennsylvania.
● Provides training in the proper use, care and storage of food products, general
lab/shop equipment and specialty equipment related to the particular specialty;
instructs students in all related safety procedures and protocols.
● Stays abreast of technological advances in the area of specialization.
● Monitors student progress and assesses their skills according to standardized
measurements.
● Participates in the development of internships and apprenticeships for students
enrolled in the program; ensures that students have a variety of school and
work-based experiences; oversees students in a variety of job/school sites and in
transit from one location to another.
● Implements the educational program within the standards and policies approved by the
Board of Education and guidelines established by the Office of Career and Technical
Education.
● Attains and maintain teaching certification as required by the Pennsylvania Department
of Education. Provide to the District, on an annual basis, documentation as required by
the District which may include, but not be limited to transcript, semester grade report,
etc. evidencing continuous enrollment in credit-bearing coursework leading toward
permanent teaching certification.
● Maintains current industry-recognized certificate(s) as approved by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education, including participation in technical seminars, workshops, and
classes that are related to the industry area.
● Participates in regular professional development activities to keep abreast of advances
in technology, curriculum and instructional delivery techniques, and remain current in
all areas of the field of expertise.
● Prepares students for industry by teaching industry-recognized standards; administers
industry-recognized certification examinations approved by the District to students, as
appropriate.
● Provides technical skills training to students to prepare for the appropriate
PDE-approved end-of-program assessment, if applicable.
● Assists in the development, revision and implementation of the curriculum as it
pertains to each instructional area in accordance with established State and District
guidelines and formats.
● Develops, revises, and implements instructional activities to support the curriculum.
● Utilizes a diversity of instructional methods in order to motivate students and promote
learning.
● Mentors students and/or refers students to appropriate school specialists.
● Provides and maintains a well-organized and safe learning environment.
● Implements and maintains a preventative safety program in lab and classroom areas
consistent with related OSHA standards; involves students in the safety program.
● Prepares lesson plans weekly and provides lesson plans for short-term substitutes as
required by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
● Maintains daily attendance records and instructional plans.
● Implements and maintains a system of student discipline and encourages appropriate
student behavior, in accordance with policies approved by the School Board.
● Maintains student records, including Performance Assessment Logs, and
communicates student progress to parents/guardians.
● Develops and promotes student leadership, civic responsibility and citizenship through
the integration of Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) activities into the
curriculum, and through membership and participation in CTSO conferences and
competitions.
● Prepares students for work-based learning opportunities, as appropriate.
● Maintains and conducts Occupational Advisory Committee (OAC) meetings as least
twice annually for the purpose of aligning career and technical program with current
industry standards, and to seek recommendations for improvements to curriculum,
facilities, equipment, and safety.
● Uses, maintains, and safeguards inventory, and disposes of all instructional equipment
in accordance with all applicable Federal, State, and District requirements and policies
approved by the School Board.
● Participates in the development of assigned students’ Individualized Education
Programs (IEPs) and utilizes all accommodations as indicated on the IEPs.
Title: Teacher, Culinary Arts
● Maintains all paperwork and reports pertinent to position and as required by standards
and policies approved by the School Board and guidelines established by the Office of
Career and Technical Education.

Minimum Requirements
● Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
● Two years of current full-time experience in a food related industry occupation.


OR


● Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
● Completion of an approved training program in the field of culinary arts.
● Two years of current full-time, experience in a food related industry occupation.


OR


● Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. .
● Two years of current full-time, paid experience in the field of CULINARY ARTS.
● Current possession or immediate attainment (within 1 year of hire) of SERVSAFE
Manager Certificate and SERVSAFE instructor/proctor certificate.


OR


● Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and/or completion of
post- secondary technical training program at an accredited trade/technical school.
● Four years of current full-time, paid experience in the field of CULINARY ARTS
● Current possession or immediate attainment (within 1 year of hire) of SERVSAFE
Manager Certificate and SERVSAFE instructor/proctor certificate


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
●Demonstrated knowledge of:
o the food service industry.
o the modern methods, theories and practices in the food service industry.
o the materials and techniques used in the food service industry.
o the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the food service
industry.
o the proper care and use of tools and instruments used in the food service
industry.
o the skills required to pass the NOCTI (both written and practical) for teacher
placement.
o the practice of all safety procedure standards in the industry.
o the use of a computer.


●Demonstrated ability to:
o select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional
methods.
o implement assessment tools for effective student evaluations.
o communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
o establish effective working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses:
Possession of valid ServSafe Food Safety certification (safety and sanitation) with a
score of 90 or above.


Possession of valid certification of training Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points
(HACCP).


Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vocational/Intern Certificate in the
