Job Summary

A teacher in the School District of Philadelphia plans and teaches their subject area, following the scope and sequence for all courses; provides instruction to students in a variety of planned courses; provides the use of real life applications and simulations to instruct students in the analysis and interpretation of material being presented; instructs the use of tools, materials, processes and applications of technology, including pertinent software applications, in the development of lessons; and uses formal and informal classroom and district assessments.

Demonstration Teachers are unique educators. They utilize the most current educational techniques and instructional media, which contribute to effective teaching practices in their specific teaching areas. They are observed at times by personnel from within the School District of Philadelphia as well as visitors from other areas and institutions, both national and international.

The District is offering the Demonstration Teacher examination for the following positions:

  1. Demonstration Teacher of Math 7-12

  2. Demonstration Teacher of Elementary K-4/4-6 

  3. Demonstration Teacher of Hearing Support*

*Candidates interested in the Demonstration Teacher of Hearing Support role must also complete the screening process for the Hearing Support Teacher Pool application.

 

Essential Functions
 

  • Assesses the skill level of students and aligns classroom goals and activities to established state and local standards.
  • Provides instruction in respective subject area.
  • Provides students with instruction emphasizing real life applications and simulations.
  • Teaches inquiry techniques that encourage experimentation and alternative approaches to problem solving.
  • Provides technical expertise in the use of tools, materials, processes and applications of technology, including pertinent software applications.
  • Provides students with learning experiences requiring them to demonstrate comprehension of concepts and the ability to use technological resources in developing solutions to problems.
  • Provides instruction that encourages students to use learned skills as tools for inquiry-based learning.
  • Creates a classroom environment in which students have access to subject-related materials that address their needs and interests.
  • Collaborates with staff members within and across disciplines to integrate subject-specific skills across the curriculum.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest developments and improvements in education as it affects the instructional program; attends faculty meetings to discuss school problems and teaching methods.
  • Maintains classroom discipline.
  • Maintains attendance, grade and other required records.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Have three years of full time, paid, post-Baccalaureate experience as a teacher.
    • In order to be considered for this position, you must provide details of such experience on your application.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from supervisory personnel who have direct knowledge of your qualifications can also be included.
  • A copy of your Bachelor's degree or a copy of your college transcript which shows the date you earned your Bachelor's degree must be included in your application as well. 
 
Certificates/Licenses
  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in respective grade level, and endorsements in respective subject area(s)
    • Copy of certification or an original letter from a certification officer must be included with application.

 

How to become a Demonstration Teacher:                                                   
There is a four (4) step process to become a Demonstration Teacher.

Step 1  - Application 

  1. In order to be considered for the Demonstration Teacher Examination, applicants must apply to this job posting and include all of the above requirements in their application. 
  2. Candidate applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure candidates meet minimum qualifications.

Step 2- Demonstration Teacher Oral Examination

  1. Candidates who pass the initial application review are scheduled or an Oral examination with the Demonstration Principal and Demonstration Teacher Team.
  2. Passing candidates advance to the next step, the Demonstration Teacher Observation/ Lesson.

Step 3- Demonstration Teacher Observation/ Lesson

  1. Demonstration Observation/lesson with the Demonstration Principal and Demonstration Teacher Team.
  2. Advancing candidates are eligible for site selection and ranked based on the oral examination and Demonstration Observation/lesson.

Step 4- Site Selection Process 

  1. The Hancock Demonstration School and Masterman Demonstration School Site Selection Committee will review all eligible candidates and then schedule interviews based on the school’s needs and the candidates’ qualifications.
