Position and Program Overview

The School District of Philadelphia Teacher Residency Program is a teacher preparation program for college graduates, career changers, and community members who wish to prepare to be a highly effective teacher in a School District of Philadelphia public school. During the residency year, prospective teachers complete targeted masters-level coursework at one of four residency partners while training in a SDP classroom alongside a high-performing mentor teacher. At the end of the residency year, graduates will earn their PA teacher certification and will participate in the Site Selection process to interview and be hired as a full-time SDP teacher for the following academic year.

Job Summary

Serves as a teacher resident and assists in the facilitation of the instructional program. Works directly with students under the guidance of experienced teachers. Provides direct support to the academic program.

Essential Functions

Under the guidance of and in collaboration with an experienced teacher:

  • Assists in the facilitation of the instructional program.
  • Interacts with students on a one-to-one, small group, and whole group basis to engage students in learning activities as needed.
  • Provides small and/or whole group instruction to students.
  • Assists in the creation of a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Attends professional development sessions as required.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in education, including teaching aids, textbooks, and materials.
  • Maintains attendance, grades, and other required records.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a GPA above 3.0.
  • Pennsylvania passing Praxis content exam score for middle grades or secondary grades.
  • Commit to teaching at a District school (non-charter) for 3 years after residency year.

  • learn to plan and prepare lessons.
  • learn to select and organize curriculum content and apply appropriate instructional methods.
  • learn to develop materials for use in instructional programs.
  • learn to use and apply audio-visual methods and materials to classroom situations.
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Additional Information

During tenure of employment, employees must be continuously enrolled in a Pennsylvania education teacher certificate program and complete credits toward certificate.
