Title: Director, Library Science

Job Summary:

Directs and oversees all library and digital library programs and services which focus on supporting the educational mission of the School District of Philadelphia to accelerate academic achievement for all students. Ensures the library collection and equipment including print and digital materials are maintained in accordance with District policies and that the collection is a multicultural, gender, and disability-fair collection. Plans and directs library programs and monitors library services to ensure that identified goals are being met. Creates opportunities for staff, parents/guardians, students and the community to provide feedback on library programs, services and collection within a customer-focused framework.

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-represented position. The salary grade is 4030, starting at $96, 122 commensurate with experience and aligned to ensure internal equity with similarly situated roles.

Essential Functions

  Determines, defines and outlines operating procedures for achieving the goals, objectives and priorities of the District.

  Develops library and digital library programs that are aligned with District, Pennsylvania Department of Education, and governmental guidelines and standards; ensures the integration of library services across all content areas to facilitate student learning and achievement.

  Develops short-term and long-range goals and plans for collections, services, and programs in keeping with Accelerate Philly, the District's five year strategic plan and operating policies; studies and plans development of library services to meet present and future District needs.

  Participates in the planning, organization, and management of technical and digital services for the library.

  Provides advice and information on issues related to library and digital library programs; stays informed of developments in library management.

  Plans and manages the distribution of resources; provides technical assistance in budgetary matters related to library programs and services.

  Builds and maintains broad-based support, collaboration and partnerships with internal and external parties.

  Develops and implements key data elements, data collection strategies and reporting activities for library programs; evaluates programmatic activities and measures results against defined objectives.

  Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in library science. 

Seven years of full-time, paid, professional experience in the field of library science, three of which  have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity. 

NOTE: An applicant who does not meet the minimum education or work experience requirements  listed above may be considered if, at the sole discretion of the Talent Office, they have a unique  combination of education and work experiences that indicates potential for success in this role. 

Certificates/Licenses 

Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate for Supervisor, Library Science PK - 12.

The candidate must ensure that all of their relevant work experience is reflected on their resume prior to the submission of their application for District employment.

Demonstrated knowledge of: 

o standard library principles and practices. 

o digital library services and procedures. 

o the utilization of technology to deliver and enhance library service. 

o budgetary practices and procedures.  

o guide and channel resources, ideas and recommendations for problem solution and program refinement. 

Demonstrated ability to: 

o provide leadership in the implementation of best practices in library administration.

o measure and evaluate the effectiveness of library services against defined goals and  objectives. 

o keep informed of current developments in library management and technology.

o ensure that library materials meet the needs of a diverse District. 

o effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. 

o establish and maintain effective working relationships.
